"Manipulation" comes from the Latin "manipulus," meaning "handful." Those of us who have worked with puppets know the full truth of this.

We also know that there are a million kinds of puppets, which might lead one to believe that there are a million kinds of manipulation, but really there are only two: effective and ineffective. In this workshop we will concentrate entirely on the former (as ineffective manipulation is so commonplace that it really doesn't need to be taught).

To make this point, we will work with hand puppets, rod puppets, and "marionnettes portées," applying the same principles to each style of puppet.

Master these principles and your audiences will believe what they see — no matter how irrational or impossible the details of your story!

Andrew and Bonnie Periale have become well known for their originality and technical skills as Perry Alley Theatre. Nominated for an Emmy (as well as being finalists at the International Festival of Film and Television), they are still best known for their live performances. They have performed at the Smithsonian Institution, The National Cathedral, Alanta's Center For Puppetry Arts, National and Regional Festivals both here and abroad. The Periales have worked together for almost 30 years. They have had diverse training in theater, puppetry, clowning, dance, music and design, both here and abroad. Among other honors are two UNIMA Citations Of Excellence and PofA's George Latshaw Award. Their very original productions, using puppets, masks, music and sometimes kitchen utensils, have made them favorites with audiences of all ages.
