NPF Workshop: Object Theater

We discuss the potential, power, and resonance of objects. We begin to experiment with objects (brought by the instructor) to create multi-arts tableau vivant, including elements of drawing, sculpture, painting, music, sound and text - recreating theatrical form and structure, using the particular harmony of the space, and natural elements of sound, light, and atmosphere. We experiment with the animation/manipulation of objects - not in anthropomorphic ways, but using the inherent power and resonance of the object. We include the human body as an object and image. Everything is manipulated. The workshop will include a performance of Haverty's recent production 'An Escape'.

Dear 'Experiments in Object Theatre' workshop participants -

Would you please bring to the workshop TWO 'power objects'. These should be objects that have a special, powerful resonance for you, either by representing or channeling something important to you, or reminding you of something or someone. If at all possible they should also be visually striking. I will provide ancillary objects for us to work with, but it is very important that you bring TWO objects of your own. Michael Haverty is a director, playwright, puppeteer, artistic associate at the Center For Puppetry Arts and Artistic Director of Haverty Marionettes. For over eight years, Michael has created bold, dynamically sensorial productions that expand and explore the vocabulary of puppetry and the language of theater. Michael has directed and performed in over 15 productions at the CPA, and created work for Synchronicity Theatre, Dad's Garage Theater, PushPush Theater, the Woodruff Arts Center and 7 Stages Theater.
