Description:

The purpose of this lecture workshop is to provide tips and strategies on how to market yourself as a puppeteer to conduct workshops and/or assembly programs in school settings. We will address the following topics:

  • How to network on a grass roots level in your local community

  • How to network on a state and regional level

  • How to identify umbrella arts organizations that hire puppeteers to work in the schools

  • The importance of writing a compelling cover letter, brief proposal to schools, as well as how to research and apply for grants on a local and state level

  • Skills and abilities the schools seek in a puppeteer!

Bio of Workshop Presenter:

Carol Sterling is Arts Education Director for Brooklyn Arts Council, in Brooklyn, New York, where she hires over 200 teaching artists a year (including puppeteers) and places them in schools and community settings in New York City. She is a Past President of UNIMA-USA and former Education Consultant for Puppeteers of America and former Advisory Board member of The Puppetry Journal. As an educational puppeteer, Carol has presented at P of A Festivals, as well as provided workshops for puppeteers and educators throughout the United States, Germany, Israel and Japan.
