Description:
The purpose of this workshop is to explore a method of table top puppetry using children's literature to extend children's understandings and connections to text. Participants will explore the Reading Response Ladder which provides ways for students to create puppet shows which represent high level thinking and connection to text. The workshop would be beneficial for those doing puppetry with children, particularly teachers and librarians. Participants will explore the possibilities that the Reading Response Ladder offers for students grades 2-12 and also create a table top puppet show using a children's book during the workshop.

Bio of Workshop Presenter:
Sharon M. Peck is a puppeteer, professor and teaching artist who is committed to improving the literacy lives of students and teachers. Sharon performs authentic Punch and Judy Shows at historical re-enactments with her sister as "The Punchbowl Sisters." She also supports teachers as they integrate puppetry into their literacy instruction. Sharon is a full time professor of literacy who researches the use of puppetry in the classroom. She has done residencies focusing on shadow and table top puppetry. Her favorite muppet is Grover, and her favorite snack is spiced gum drops.
