Haverty Marionettes' new adaptation of William Faulkner's classic American novel, "As I Lay Dying," features hand-carved wooden marionettes, animated two-dimensional portraits, silhouette film, and live musicians playing an antique pump organ and vintage phonograph records.With the combination of a fast-paced, kaleidoscopic structure, an ever-shifting point of view, and a heightened level of tragedy that approaches the comically absurd, Faulkner's novel begs for adaptation to the puppet stage. Haverty's adaptation employs a carnivalesque design, Sicilian puppet traditions, and costumed performers to evoke the story's farcical-heroic journey to the graveyard.
